Perfect God

Psalms 25:15
My eyes are ever on the Lord,
for only he will release my feet from the snare.

It is true God blesses us through people; that does not mean we should go through life looking up to people we expect God to use to bless us. The most unlikely people can disappoint you when you least expect them to. The only one you can reliably look up to in life is God. “Don’t look for a perfect man; look for the perfect God” (Unknown).

Rise Above It

Matthew 20:19 KJV
[Jesus said] And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him : and the third day he shall rise again.

A lot of people go through life, allowing whatever bad stuff that happens to keep them stagnant in their past, while time passes. Life is usually unpredictable, but like Christ, one can be intentional about how we react to it. You should be able to rise above the things people do and say to try to keep you down. “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).

Time Alone Does not Heal

Ephesians 5:16 KJV

[16] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Time itself is an intangible unit of measurement of our lives. It is what you do with time that brings about a desired result. When you add up ingredients for preparation, it does not just get ready in an hour or so. It is the application of heat and other methods during that time, that determines the end result of the meal. Time alone did not change anything; it is what was done during that time that changed it. It is what you did yesterday that resulted in your quality of life today. Likewise what you do with your time today will determine the quality of your life tomorrow. “Time heals nothing. It’s what you choose to do what that time that makes all the difference” (Amy Morin).

He Holds the World

Psalms 2:1 NIV

Why do the nations conspire

and the peoples plot in vain?

There are some conspiracy theories about the leaders of the world who have their own agenda and seem to hold the world at their beck and call. It causes unnecessary fear and doubt because we are children of a God who knows the end from the beginning and the end He allows us to see in His Word shows that we are on the winning side. There is no need to fear end-time doom stories because He has got us in His hands and everything will turn out in our favor.

Respect your Hustle

1 Timothy 6:6 KJV
[6] But godliness with contentment is great gain.

In a world of social media it takes strong mental resolve not to compare your life to others’ highlight reel. We all know comparison is the thief of joy. Nobody is going to post pictures of themselves having a bad day for people to see. Everything is curated to make you see a certain reality, not the actual reality. Just trust in God, do your best to make the right choices, and respect your destiny, that somehow it will all work out. You don’t need to be worked up over someone else’s success because it’s none of your business. Be content with what you have; every energy you put into wanting what someone else has is wasted energy that you could use to improve your life.

Clichés

Ephesians 5:6 NIV

[6] Let no one deceive you with empty words

Sometimes, Christians hide behind empty clichés which when examined carefully, may not really make sense and in some contexts may be actually offensive. Phrases like “God is my co-pilot”, “Heaven helps those who help themselves”, “I’m forgiven, not perfect”, “When God closes a door, He opens a window” etc. are not necessarily spiritually sound just because we throw a few metaphysical words around in a sentence. We may even use them in evangelism which can cause confusion and make religion seem like an opium-induced reaction to reality. “Attempting to get at truth means rejecting stereotypes and cliches” (Harold Evans).

Generational “Curse”

Deuteronomy 32:7 KJV

[7] Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

Looking at the past is not always a bad thing, especially if the purpose is to learn from it. For example, a recurring familial situation may be mistaken for a spiritual generational ‘curse’ , but may in reality be a pattern of mistakes of grandparents, parents etc which they may have unconsciously passed down one to the other, and can be resolved through commitment to breaking the cycle. “Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat it” (George Santayana).*
