Too much too bad

Proverbs 25:16 KJV
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

There is no one without their own share of problems in this life. Nobody can be happy all the time. Though we would have it differently if we could, bad times come so we can better recognize good times. You would not know that you are happy if you have never experienced sadness. “…Suffering isn’t a bad thing, it is just part of life. Sometimes in order to appreciate happiness we have to experience unhappiness. We can’t say we are living if we are only choosing to allow in experiences and feelings that feel safe for us” (Alisa Hutton).

YOLO

Proverbs 4:26 KJV
Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.

The ‘YOLO’ attitude seem to have the opposite desired effect. You would think that the fear of only living once would make people more careful with their choices, but rather most people justify reckless decisions with “life is short”, instead of making choices that will guarantee that their “short” life is well kept and of good quality. Don’t be like most people. “Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever (Keri Russell).

Appreciate

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 KJV
I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. [13] And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

We all have things we think we would be happier with. If only we could just manage to get hold of those things, life would be better. But it is better to appreciate what you have before they become history; they are things you once dreamed of. “Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life” (Omar Khayyam).

Suffer now enjoy later

Lamentations 3:27 KJV
It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

In life you do not always get everything you want when you want it. When you make a choice, you also choose to give up on the alternative i.e. opportunity cost. It is better to deny yourself immediate gratification to benefit later, than to force only to realize
that the opportunity cost was not worth giving up. “The ability to discipline yourself to delay gratification in the short term in order to enjoy greater rewards in the long term, is the indispensable prerequisite for success” (Brian Tracy).

Grace

Lamentations 3:22 KJV
It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.

Nothing is guaranteed in life, except death. We take things for granted, like health, etc because they seem to never fail us or bounce back when they do. We forget that everything we have, and even some things we do not have are by the grace of God. “…Ask God for a calm, thankful heart that sees all the blessings His grace imparts” (David Jeremiah).

Self-actualization

Proverbs 7:23 KJV
Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

In today’s world there is the need to stay on top of things and get there fast, ‘there’ being the self-actualization stage of Maslow’s theory of needs. This ‘need’ mostly comes about when we compare ourselves with our contemporaries, forgetting that everyone has their own journey to walk in this life. “While you’ll feel compelled to charge forward it’s often a gentle step back that will reveal to you where you and what you truly seek” (Rasheed Ogunlaru).

Matters

Philippians 1:10 CEB
pray this so that you will be able to decide what really matters and so you will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ.

Sometimes we mistake motion for progress. It is important to always know the “why” of every activity you find yourself doing with your precious time. Not everything is worth your time. As a child of God your lifetime is not yours to waste. “Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter” –(Francis Chan).
