Romans 12:15 KJV: Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Galatians 6:2 KJV

Bear ye one another’s

burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

1 Corinthians 13:2 KJV: And though I have…all knowledge… and have not charity, I am nothing.

Sometimes, Christians have a problem showing true empathy to others in times of trouble. The Bible is not meant to replace basic human empathy. Usually, when a Christian opens up about their grief or problems, we are too quick to bombard them with Bible verses and a know-it-all attitude. As Job’s three friends learned, not all problems can be quoted away. Sometimes, a listening ear or your quiet presence, and basically trying to put yourself in the person’s shoes without imposing preconceived ideas and Christian clichés on them can be a better help than digging for verses to prove a point. “Without exception, empathy is always appropriate” (Stephen Covey).
